I was told I was a non responder when training under my high school swim coach. But fortunately at the time I was smart enough to know that his style of training did not suit me. I moved to a different club and 12 months later I had broke 3 PBs that all stood for 1.5-2 years. For me It was a case of less volume and higher intensity in the pool.
Yes, but I also think (and have observed) how much of the different responses is due to lifestyle factors: sleep/hydration/ diet/ eexternal stressors.
The researchers don't (can't) measure all of those things, so they don't account for them. It's hard to respond to training on 5 hours sleep, dehydrated, eating only chocolate and energy drinks and looking after your disabled parents while working two part time jobs and studying.
